Frequently Asked Questions
These questions came from teachers at the NorCal August PD session. If you have additional questions to be added to this list, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
What is the College and Career Indicator or CCI?
CCI is a mandate from the state to ensure that all graduating students are “prepared” for college and career.
Do all of our graduating students need CCI?
Yes. All students graduating with Five Keys need to have CCI.
Can a student’s own work experience count? Can we use a W-2 or pay stubs as proof?
Do GED scores count towards CCI?
No. GED scores do not count towards CCI.
How long before a student comes to us can they have completed a CCI requirement?
Any approved CCI measures must have been completed within the last 4 years.
What types of verification do students need to prove they achieved CCI?
Five Keys needs to receive some sort of proof of participation (i.e. certificate, test results, or college transcript). Please be sure to upload any verification documents to “Uploaded Documents” in Oasis.
Who approves that a certificate or training counts towards CCI and that we have all the necessary documentation?
We are following the rules set out by the California Department of Education. If you have questions about whether or not something counts towards CCI, ask your principal or send an email to email@example.com.
Can students get academic credit for CCI and how do we put it on the WPR transcripts?
Yes! Reach out to your principal about whether or not your student is eligible for Work Experience credit. If so, your principal will input it directly onto their transcript.
Does this apply to GED and HiSET grads?
Yes. ALL Five Keys grads need to complete CCI.
Can any student be dual enrolled?
Yes. Any student in the community can be enrolled at both Five Keys and a local community college. We recommend that a student has a 9+ TABE in the relevant subject area and at least 110 credits.
How far in advance should we collect CCI?
Begin to talk to students about CCI when they first enroll at Five Keys but they may not know what training or classes will be most relevant to them. You can help coach students through the process through through the College and Career Readiness Curriculum or a career assessment.
Does Math for Work count?
No. Math for Trades (available on the intranet under CTE curriculum) will count.
Can I facilitate classes to help students get certified?
If you are interested in facilitating a specific class or training that counts towards CCI, you should talk directly to your principal.
How do we get a state seal of biliteracy? I have many bilingual students. Is this low hanging fruit?
The State Seal of Biliteracy tests that a student is highly proficient in reading, writing, and speaking in a language other than English. We currently do not provide this test but may in the future.
Can the existing College and Career Readiness curriculum be used to satisfy the CCI?
No. The College and Career Readiness curriculum cannot itself be used to fulfill CCI but it is a great resource for students who are unsure of what comes after graduation or want to explore college options. Teachers can use this curriculum as a jumping off point for helping students choose the best CCI pathway.
What college classes count towards CCI?
ANY two college classes count towards CCI with a grade of C- or above. Students can take classes that are .5 credits or higher. They all count equally. Physical Education courses are the only classes that DO NOT count towards CCI.
